Commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the 27th of January, in Lithuania.
Here is a list of some of the events planned in order to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Lithuania in 2010. Information provided by the Secretariat of the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania .
- A conference about the meaning of the 27th of January is planned in Panevezys, organized by Panevezys Jewish Community.
- Another conference, "Kaunas' streets remember them" on Jewish historical and cultural heritage will take place in Public Institution Kaunas Julijanava Catholic Secondary School. The conference organizers are the teachers of the Tolerance. See here for more information.
- 2 performances about the tragic destiny of Jews during WWII are planned: The performance "Anna Frank. Always yours" will take place in Panevezys theatre and the performance "Interview" in Telsiai Theatre.
- 2 official meetings for commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance day have been organised in Vilnius (the capital of Lithuania) for local and foreign societies:
- On the 26th of January the Charlie Chaplin film "The greatest dictator" will be shown in the Tolerance Center, a section of the Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum. Guests from foreign embassies, politicians and citizens of Vilnius will be invited.
- On the 27th of January a commemoration event will be organized in the building of Jewish Community of Lithuania. The organizers are the Jewish Community of Lithuania and The Secretariat of the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania. During this meeting an exhibition of drawings by Vilnius Virsuliskiu Secondary School students who participated in the project "The Ghetto in my town" will be opened. The students will present their project, which was supported by ITF in 2009. The main accent of this evening is the documentary film "(Not) Possible Escapes". This evening is organized for guests from foreign embassies, politicians, the Jewish Community and local society of Vilnius.
- A number of events will be held at 21 Schools in different cities in Lithuania. These schools, where Tolerance Educational centers are established, will organize different commemorations:
- The communities of 11 schools are going to watch some films: (our schools have chosen these films: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; Ambulance; The Ghetto of Panevezys; The Pianist; Surviving history; Holocaust in Lithuania). The schools are planning to organize discussions after watching the films.
- Other schools are planning to organize special lessons about the Holocaust: stories of survivors and tragic destinies during the period of the Holocaust.
