Netherlands’ Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 Mei Provides English Information on Website
The Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 Mei of the Netherlands has designed a special part of the website for English information on their activities, which can be found at: http://www.4en5mei.nl/english.
The Netherlands annually commemorates World War II and Liberation Day on the 4th and 5th of May. The Netherlands is the only country in Europe that commemorates the victims of the Second World War and celebrates its liberation on two separate but consecutive days.
The National 4 and 5 May Committee was established in 1987 by Royal Decree. Former Prime Minister Lubbers initiated the establishment of the Committee, thereby ensuring the future of the Dutch National Days of Remembrance and Liberation. Although a variety of activities connected to May 4 and 5 had taken place all through the country since 1946, coordination and structure on a national level were lacking.
The National 4 and 5 May Committee is responsible for the official national ceremonies in relation to May 4 and 5, which include the presents of Her Majesty the Queen and the Prime Minister. Duties in the field of improving significance, information, education, communication, coordinating, and structuring nationwide activities are of equal importance.
On behalf of the Dutch government, the National Committee for 4 and 5 May is a member of the ITF.
The National 4 and 5 May Committee hopes to expand knowledge and awareness about its work internationally through the new part of the website with English information.
The National 4 and May Committee also has another website available in English: the web portal www.romasinti.eu shows a digital exhibition "The forgotten genocide" about Roma and Sinti.
